Bones Bones have many important roles to play - they give support and rigidity, protect internal organs, act as levers for muscles and provide a mineral store for Calcium, Phosphorus and Magnesium. Bone is made up of two layers - a rigid one for strength and an elastic layer for flexibility and if it wasn’t for these two layers, bone would be brittle and would fracture easily. Bone requires minerals for growth and strength of which the most important is Calcium~ The Calcium in bones is continually being replaced and the Calcium content of a horses skeleton is replaced in its entire Calcium content every 200 days. Importantly, Phosphorus works with Calcium in this process, and the ratio of each is a delicate one of 2:1 (C:P). Growth related problems or orthopaedic diseases can occur if the horse is lacking in these nutrients or if they are not supplied in the correct relationship. The age at which horses stop growing varies by breed and sex and, even when growth plates have closed, bone still continues to change and alter. This process is called remodelling, the breaking down of old bone and formulation of new bone, which happens in response to training and exercise and leads to stronger bone where loading is greatest. Careful training and nutrition encourages the remodelling process and creates a stronger bone structure, reducing the possibility of injury. It is often thought that serious bone injuries in perfonnance horses happen to normal bone in abnormal circumstances. Recent studies, however, have shown that this is not the case and, in fact, the majority of problems happen in weakened bone exposed to normal impact and loading, highlighting the need for adequate nutrition and correct training.

The recent interest in silicon is down to its role in the development of new bone and the calcification process. Travelling and stying away at shows can be streeful for horses causing many of them to stop drinking. If a horse isn't drinking, performance will be effected.
